Manready Mercantile started back in 2012 in my apartment here in Houston as I began making soy candles in whiskey glasses and went door-to-door selling them to neighbors and businesses. I wanted to prove to people that the American dream still exists and that you can start something from nothing and not have to ask for a handout. Since then, I opened a retail store which is become one of the top 25 stores in the world according to GQ magazine. We employee 15 incredible team members and have over 2000 different products, consisting of over 200 made in the USA brands, and a few select international brands.
At Manready, we have a mantra that says, WORK HARD LIVE WELL, and even have it as a registered trademark. I believe in honesty, integrity, working with the community, and supporting other small businesses. Whenever I started the business, I had no idea that it would evolve into what it has today. I’m very thankful and feel very blessed to have the opportunity to create and to be in control of my own destiny. The ironic thing is, most of the people that come in here are women, and they’re typically looking for a gift for a guy in their life. Heck, they even pick up a lot of good for themselves. The company has morphed into a modern-day general store and even though the name of the business is Manready Mercantile, we mainly sell unisex goods. Our products range from candles jerky, clothing, grooming supplies, travel accessories, and gourmet food items. The punchline is, we have a little bit of something for everybody, no matter who you are or from what walk of life you come from.
The favorite thing about running my company is the fact that every day is a new day and I literally never know what’s going to pop up, which always keeps it exciting. When you make as many different products if I do, nothing ever seems to get old. I think that’s important in a job because are so many people are miserable out there from there working dead-end jobs, and this is honestly the most exciting thing I’ve ever done in my life. I think the future of Manready means more brick-and-mortar locations but also a huge focus on Manready.com. Our website gets more and more traction each and every day and I want it to become the go-to website for quality made goods. My dream is for folks to know that regardless of what you get you always know it’s gonna be premium quality and everything’s gonna tell a story.
My definition of kindness is listening to people and what they have to say, greeting patrons with a handshake, and treating every single customer like family. You really can’t judge a book by its cover and I think it’s ridiculous if people do.
